What Insurance Changes You Need to Make When Moving

DON’T LET YOUR COVERAGE GET LOST IN THE MOVE

Moving soon?

Moving to a new home? Amid the packing and planning, don’t forget to update your insurance policies. Whether you're buying, renting, or relocating across state lines, ensuring your coverage matches your new situation is key to protecting what matters most.

Don’t let your coverage get lost in the move.

Moving is an exciting milestone—but it’s also a key time to review and update your insurance. Notifying your insurance agent before your move-in date helps prevent coverage gaps and ensures you're protected during and after the transition.

From shifting risk zones to new property needs, your move can impact your homeowners, renters, auto, and even life insurance policies. Here’s what to check off your insurance update list.

Updating Your Homeowners or Renters Insurance Address

Renting to Renting:
If you're moving from one rental to another, update your existing renter's policy to reflect your new address and update any landlord or property management contact details.

Renting to Owning:
Transitioning from a rental to a purchased home? You’ll need to apply for a homeowner's policy effective on your closing date. Be sure to cancel your renter's policy once the move is complete.

Homeowner to Homeowner:
Already a homeowner but purchasing a new property? You’ll need to apply for a new homeowner's policy for the new address, effective on the closing date. Your previous policy may need to be updated or canceled when your former home is sold.

Coverage During the Moving Process

Insurance during the move is often overlooked—but it’s important. Ensuring your new policy is in effect before your move helps maximize coverage for losses that may happen in transit.

If you’re using a professional moving company or moving long-distance, ask about additional insurance options that may be offered to protect your personal property during transport.

Auto Insurance Considerations

Don’t forget your vehicle! A move—especially across state lines—can affect your auto insurance policy. Be sure to:

  • Update your address for accurate risk rating

  • Adjust your commuting distance if it changes

  • Apply for a new policy if you’re moving out of state, and complete registration and licensing in your new state

Life Insurance and Other Policies

Update your address on all life insurance policies so you don’t miss important communications. This is also a good time to review your beneficiaries, and any coverage amounts to reflect life changes.

Don’t forget to update umbrella, health, boat, or recreational vehicle insurance policies as well. Location changes could impact coverage and premiums.

Inform Your Agent and Financial Institutions

Before your moving date, notify your insurance agent and financial institutions about your change of address. They’ll help you review, cancel, or reissue any policies as needed.

Moving Insurance Checklist

Before you unpack those boxes, check these items off:

✅ Ensure coverage is active during the move
✅ Update auto policy address and garaging location
✅ Notify your agent about any new purchases for coverage
✅ Update your life insurance address and beneficiaries
